02-19-18 Landlord X-Files

Hope you had a great weekend and maybe are lucky enough to be extending into today for President's Day.

Today we delve into the strange and unexplainable stories between landlords and tenants:

  • check
Dublin, Ireland - a landlord properly appealed to the courts to have his tentant evicted.  During the eviction a housing activist recorded the family being removed from the house and posted it on Facebook and the video went viral.  After countless death threats the landlord has sued Facebook to have it removed after they ruled the video did not violate its community standards.
  • check
Kitchener, Canada - Is a burrito a wrap?  Pita Pit signed a lease and included a clause giving it exclusive rights to sell "pitas and wraps" in it's plaza location.  Two years later the landlord reached a deal with the owners of Holy Guacamole to open a location in the same building.  Right before Guacamole was set to open its doors Pita took the landlord to court for violating it's exclusivity terms arguing that Guacamole's tacos, burritos, and quesadillas all constitute wraps because they are wrapped in a tortilla.  The landlord argued Guacamole's menu was different by relying on the Wikipedia definition of pitas having Arabic origins.  Pita won with the judge declaring that wraps did appear to be focus of Guacamole's business.
  • check
Las Vegas - a man told his landlord that he would have the money soon to pay the rent...after the bankrobbery.  Sure enough...two days later he robbed a bank slipping the teller a note that he needed $3,000 in $100 demoninations.

Heard any good landlord tales lately?  Drop me a line back if you have and I'll share them in a future line-up
